Virtual Learning: The Educational Trend in the US in the 21st Century

The educational system in the United States has evolved dramatically in the past few years. Gone were the days when the students are confined to the four walls of the classroom, sitting in lectures while the teachers are giving direct instructions.

Computers and the Internet have penetrated the school walls, providing students opportunities to personalized education. Computers and the Internet have also given students far-reaching access to resources located elsewhere, as well as get additional help on more challenging assignments. They have given students the ability to engage in new and different ways of learning.

According to experts, web-based learning is actually closer to the students’ future on job realities. Online education is similar to the manner of conducting business online, facilitating fast communication and exchange of ideas. Likewise, it enabled easier conversation between and among the teachers and the students, as well as fingertip access to new instructional methods based on software programs and scholarly works.

Online education is a welcome change. More universities in the United States are including online learning programs in their curricula. Elite learning institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford University offer a number of degrees online. Stanford alone boasted of more than 50 online masters programs, most of them in engineering and science.

Through the internet, students can connect to people and events around the globe and consider themselves as global citizens responsible for the well-being of others and the survival of our planet.
